Pam,
Do you mind if I forward your full message to Dairywin list (New
Zealand dairy women)? There are many women on it who run their dairy
alone, and they might be able to help with comments/suggestions. They
have members from overseas too in case you like to join. The
discussion is quite focused on NZ, but people there are extremely
helpful to everyone, and you might get to hear things which women
would only share with women.
..I accompanied some Japanese farmers to NZ recently. On one of the
farms we visited the Japanese dairy ladies asked for a toilet. We got
told that the toilet is a farm-bike ride away, or a walk up the hill.
They did have something that resembled a toilet closer to the parlor,
but after the ladies used it, they said to me "This farm and parlour
were obviously built to be used by men only".
: )
More of a common sense rather than an academic observation, but I hope
a useful hint for a woman starting her first dairy.
Several Japanese dairy women I know like to decorate nicely their
office next to the parlour, usually with farm toys collection or other
nice things, as it is where visitors often come and I guess nice
feedback about something (even not milking) makes them happier. I
think happy comments help happy milking too.
