When you say "stockpiling" does this mean let some pasture grow as winter
is approaching and let the cows graze that instead of feeding hay? If this
is what that means, what about the quality of the feed value in comparison
to hay that is baled at its prime?
"Stockpiling" is deferred grazing, allowing it to accumulate during the
growing season for fall or winter grazing. Here most years I take a grass
inventory in early august and by mid-august like to fertilize those fields
I'd like to save for fall and early winter. Depending upon growing
conditions in summer, I'll defer up to to 30% of our pasture. I've never
taken a forage sample after mid december, put they have always been
exceptionally high quality, often better than hay. A little snow cover is
like keeping vegetables in the freezer, helps keep them fresh.
