I've done this in the past - fenced in a cornfield with a single strand of
12.5 ga. HT wire at about 30" height. Works OK for adult cows. Deer don't
tear it down like they do with polywire or tape. They can break insulators
when they hit it, but it's a whole lot easier to replace insulators, or
even the pins in those pinlock insulators than to have them demolish long
stretches of polywire/tape fence.
I just roll the HT wire back onto the same spinning jenny I used to unreel it.
