Mac,
Are you asking about Ultrasound or the use of measuring tools to take
physical measurements?? I think there may be some confusion here.
Linear Measurement, I believe, was first used in the 40's and was developed
by a grad student from the University of Nebraska. Recently, it has been
reintroduced by Gearld Fry (www.Bovineengineering.com). Measurements are taken
using basically a tape measure, large calipers and a altitude stick. This is
totally different from Ultrasound.
Both Linear Measurement and Ultrasound are excellent tools and both should be
used as tools. Neither should be used as the ultimate or only factor in
picking cattle.
A tape measure, altitude stick and homemade calipers can be had for under
$50.00. I would guess Ultrasound equipment, even used equipment, would cost
$10,000 to $30.000.
