A Thanksgiving Meal Shared
Ol' Slim and Jim got chosen to stay
Out with the cows on Thanksgiving Day
And Jim wasn't happy to say the very least.
'Cause at the cow camp there was two feet of snow
And the temperature hovered at fifteen below
And he was missin' the big Thanksgiving Day feast.
He knew the boys at the boss' big table
Were eating all that they were able
Of turkey and dressing and taters and salad and greens.
And Ol' Slim, it seemed just didn't care
That they were stuck with the usual fare
Of coffee and bacon and biscuits and old dry beans.
Slim was watching the dinner cook
So Jim thought he'd best take a look
At the cows and check the horses in the pen.
He muttered something to let Slim know
As he went out into the snow
Grumbling all the way to the barn and then,
He got a really big surprise.
See, he saw five pairs of eyes
When he pulled back the great barn door
"Pardon, senior," the father spoke,
"We hope you don't mind, our car is broke,
Could we stay until manana, por favor?"
Ol' Jim's heart melted that night
When he say the family's plight
And he told them that it would be okay.
With the help of the man and his son,
Jim finished what he'd begun,
Breakin' ice and putting out some hay,
Then he took them back inside
For a sumptuous feast of fried
Bacon, biscuits beans and coffee too.
After Slim said the blessing,
Ol' Jim didn't even miss the dressing
And thanksgiving trimmings, and when they were through,
The family bunked down near the fire
And Slim and Jim prepared to retire
They talked about the day and both agreed
That no matter what the Thanksgiving fare,
There is none that can compare
With dinner shared with someone who's in need.
