Dear friends,
We had a row of pin oaks that we would let the cows under during the
heat of the afternoon, but the rest of the time they were fenced out of
it (this was as much for keeping the udders clean as it was for avoiding
manure build-up under the trees.) We had to plan for them to be in a
paddock near that row of trees during the hottest times of the summer.
We also have some of the old hedge rows left around the edges of the
property, so basically, there was always some shade, however small, no
matter where they were, unless it was cooler and they didn't need it.
What's that theory about the three things dairy cows need...good food,
water, and something, was it shelter? Can't think of what it was for
sure, but as long as the cows had the first two of the three in
abundance they'd be fine. We didn't worry too much about the heat,
unless they showed signs of distress, but our Jerseys rarely seemed to
suffer from it. I miss those "girls".
It's nice to be reading Graze-l posts again! I guess it's that time of
year when dairy folks have a little more time to discuss business. Who
knows, maybe you folks will talk me back into the business some day.
