Good Evening List Friends, Today I read an article in the Canadian Cattlemen Magazine on recent research by the Western Forage/Beef Group (WFBG)in Alberta on the value of "stockpiled" forage (deferred use of summer growth for fall/winter/spring grazing). I tried a google search but could not find papers yet on that specific research. Briefly, however they found that, in Alberta, cool season grasses such, as Meadow Brome and Creeping Red Fescue, maintain their digestibility best for spring grazing. Stockpiled alfalfa and orchard grass should be grazed in the fall. A final quote: "Meadow Bromegrass appears best adapted to stockpiled forage management as indicated by consistent stockpiled yield" In the process of the google search I found the archive for the last 10 issues of the WFBG. The archive web page address is: http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/newslett.nsf/h omemain/wfbg Some of the articles in recent issues include: Cull Cows: Adding Value or Avoiding Devaluation? http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg3889?OpenDocument Grass Finished CLA Enriched Alberta Beef http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg3891?OpenDocument What Should You Do With Worn Out Pastures? http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg3059?OpenDocument Increase Production Economically: Summer Pasture Options http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg3060?OpenDocument To Bed or Not to Bed - The Meaning of Straw http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg2078?OpenDocument Straw Quality http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/ne wslett.nsf/all/wfbg2080?OpenDocument The articles often include tables of research results and economic analysis.
