The press release tells of research by Dr. John Basarab, at the Western
Forage/Beef Group in Alberta. He has discovered a non-breed specific
genetic trait in cattle that influences the efficient use of feed. Its
called the net feed intake trait..
This improved feed efficiency could mean reduced feed costs of $100 per
head and it could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 35 percent.
Dr. Basarab points our that, " There is a basic connection between beef
nutrition and greenhouse gas emissions emissions. If cattle take in more
nutrients than they need or can use, the surplus nutrients have to go
somewhere. They end up going out either the front or back end in the
form of methane gas or manure. An improperly balanced ration can mean
wasted feed dollars and increased GHG emissions."
