< they had to cross a fairly busy highway
Hi Folks,
One way to make it somewhat handier crossing a road with
cows is to preset short pieces of pipe flush in the road or
on the edge of the road.
The purpose of this is to serve as a socket for a tread-in
fence posts.
These pieces of 3/4 inch pipe need to be about 8 inches or a
foot long and driven in flush with the road surface.
The other problem with crossing a road is to cross the
elctric fence feed and the water lines.
We just snake them through the nearest culvert.
Of course we didn't apply to the state highway dept,
reasoning that it would confuse them.
----
Of course maybe you don't want to completely cross the road.
I once returned from Washington DC along US 250 through West
Virginia.
Along there I encountered a large flock of sheep that
covered the highway from fence row to fence row.
I got out and asked a man who happened to be standing there,
if he needed help getting the ewes back in the pasture.
As is common in that part of the mountains, he didn't bother
to notice me or reply.
Being the same kind of conversationalist myself, we just
stood there comfortably for a while.
He did eventually mentioned that he was sheeping down the
roadside.
After passing the time of day, I just eased on through the
sheep with my car. Part way through, I encountered a
automobile with Ontario plates stalled in the sheep with
his windows rolled up tight.
