Dave,
What do you mean by concerns?
Smaller seems to work well with cows walking long distances.
Bull calves still bring Holstein prices. They actually seem to finish
more quickly so we have a high demand for calves.
I don't know the reason but the cows have better body condition than we
saw back in the Holstein days. Many things have changed and it is
difficult to know the exact reason but with very low grain feeding we
see cows cycling soon after calving and large numbers settling on first
service.
The only real issue we have is that an old herringbone parlor with 54
inch centers gives these cows room to move too much at milking. It may
be time to build that new parlor.
If this discussion does pick up I may not respond rapidly as I'll be at
the Mid Atlantic grazing conference from the 12th through the 16th.
Regards,
Dave Forgey
Care to further comment on concerns over the smaller sized cows coming
out of these genetics?
