We've expanded from 350 to 699 cows this past year. Started milking in the
first totally kiwi rotary in the US in Jan. We've hired a NZ farm manager
and are now looking for a milking/herdsman with experience in looking after
cows, our kiwi has never seen some of the metabolic disorders and the
mastitis that we have here. Much of our problems come from the purchased
animals, it is hard to buy heifers that have been grazed and it looks like
it will take a year or more to develop the rumens on these animals. Also our
kiwi had never experienced mastitis in a 2 yr old. We have around 850 acres
under our control, raise our heifers, and put up the extra grass as silage.
