I am getting ready to interseed an old Alfalfa field into pasture and
was womdering what other mixtures people have used and varieties of
seed. for lactating dairy cows.
The pastures that I have now are (Barolex) ryegrass with (alice) white
clover and (Puna ) chicory. and another with Alfalfa, White clover,
Matua, Hakari, Italian Ryegrass, and orchard grass.
I have been very happy with both pastures but have some reservations. I
don't care to graze Alfalfa so I wanting to plant to crowd this out and
also I do not want orchard grass again. The cows pass over it in favor
of the other grasses.
Our climate is hot in summer 90-100 Degrees (low Humidity) and cold,
frost, snow in winter avg temp in winter is about 10 Degrees. annual
rain fall is only 4 inches per year. We irrigate from the first of
April to First on Oct.
Just looking for idea's now would like to try Blue grass but have been
told it is not suitable for this enviroment.
Any thought's and ideas would be great.
P.S. pasture sizes are 40 acres.
