In years past when more people burned coal in their furnaces soils
were a lot less alkaline. We are also a big coal mining valley. Not
sure how it relates though.

We have underlying caliche layers in the soil. Over much of our
property the caliche is about 3 feet below the surface. Some areas it
comes to the surface and some it's a few feet lower. We are heavy
clay soils with lots of volcanic rocks intermixed.
