A Mechanical mulcher is a machine with a rotor traveling at high speeds
with flail type knives on it (very similar to the old forage harvesters)
It is designed to cut to and sometimes to the ground! Mine is at
Tortella which I think is an Italian model. Takes a lot of horsepower to
drive but is a vital tool in management of Kykuyu for us. Our aim is to
keep the mat down. We actually speed up our rotation in the summer to
keep the cows grazing those green tips
We undersow annual rye grasses to provide us with quality cool season
feed when the kykuyu is not growing very much.

Murray, What is a 'mechanical mulcher', and why have I never seen that
machine here in NEUSA? I just mow any poorly grazed paddock, and the
next crop grows through that residue. Dick
