Hi, as a shearer, I HATE tails. If the lambs are kept back as replacements,
then you will have the collection of urine and manure back there, as some have
mentioned. Flystrike is definitely an issue in warm weather (it doesn't have
to be all that warm, if you have flies around, then you have potential for a
problem). Being able to see lambing problems is harder, anything that obstructs
a clear view of the vulva and udder is a negative in my book. In the repro
dept., some people feel that tails occasionally interfere, eh, maybe, probably
not though. However if the ram is having to service ewes through dirty tails, I
think there is a chance of him "getting dirty" and while he has some defense,
its not a thorough CIP (clean in place) system. That's just my two cents. :)
