What seems to be working better here is fencing staight across the top of
the stream bed with the permanent fence and then using a poly wire and light
posts to fence down into and across the stream, when it floods I only lose
the poly wire, not the permanent fence. I don't worry much about power to
the fence during floods, there is a switch available to turn off power to
those lines if need be, and flood water generally do not last very long in
hill country. If you have a larger flood plain, you might make the lower
wires either poly wire, or maybe aluminum, something that will break easily
when the force of the water and the debris impacts your fence.
