Now entering our fourth year as 100% grazers, we have looked at the
various "mineral theories" and come to the conclusion that, when
there's
this much diversity of opinion on a topic, then there;s really no right
or wrong answer. Or, as Confucious said "when a dispute gose on for a
very long time, it means that neither side is right".
We give our cattle white salt, red salt and selenium salt licks in no
apparant order, and they seem to enjoy all of them equally. When they
have a choice of all three, they relish all three in roughtly equal
proportion. I've had my soils tested, and couldn't make anus or abyss
of the results. I've also been told that if I sent the same samples to
Rutgers, Cornell and Penn State, I'd probably get three sets of
dissimilar results.
So, we've decided that minerals don't matter, at least not for our cows
on our pastures.
