Last summer we had LOTS of flies on the cows. What exactly does it mean
that cows that have no deficiencies aren't bothered by flies? Does that
mean that there are fewer flies, or does it mean that there are lots of
flies but the cows don't care?
thanks, Ann
First, examine why there were lots of flies. Something contributing factors
you can't control in insect populations. Heat, humidity, rainfall determine
insect populations to a great extent.
Manure piled up in a sunny location you can control.
The reasons to supplement for mineral deficiencies are more for reproductive
performance, rate of gain-milk production, which rank higher than insect
attractiveness. Yes, there is a relationship, but I'm just putting
priorities out. And flies can be controlled by many methods.
The debate centers upon free choice delivery vs. mineral delivery in
supplementing pasture intake. Obvious that free choice is inaccurate and
unreliable due to the nature of how critters eat. Do what is best for
your critters.
