First of all - he should not be in a hurry. Go to college first, but =
realise
that for the most part it will not train you for the actual task of =
farming,
but for life. I like F.W.'s suggestion of a liberal arts education.=0D
=0D
Work / intern at at least two different farms with good mentors for at =
least
two years. Learn business planning skills like at the Wisconsin School =
for
Beginning Dairy Farmers. With the knowledge gained look for a =
sharemilking
opportunity, where you can build equity in the form of cattle. Finally
strike out on your own, not buying land, but renting it. Buy good cows =
and
little machinery. Build a network of like-minded farmers with experience =
on
which you can fall back on for support when the going gets tough. Be
prepared to sacrifice personal "wants".=0D
=0D
Pursue your dream and good luck.=0D

I know a young man who wants to be a dairy farmer. He=0D
currently is a senior in high school here in Vermont. The=0D
young man is a very hard worker and very smart. This past=0D
semester he was the only senior in his school to make high=0D
honors. The teachers (except one who came to me for advice)=0D
tend to say "to bad he wants to be a farmer, he is so=0D
smart". Obviously the school is failing him regarding advice=0D
on how best to prepare for the career of his choice.=0D
Currently he is not planning to attend college. My question=0D
is, should he be encouraged to attend college or follow some=0D
other path. Vermont Technical College is nearby and has a=0D
very good dairy program. There is also a dairy program at=0D
the University of Vermont. His family does not have a farm=0D
so he has been working for a neighbor and I think he owns a=0D
few cows housed at the farm as he shows at the local fair.=0D
His dream is to own his own farm. Everyone on this list has=0D
followed a unique path so I wonder what your advice to this=0D
individual might be?=0D
=0D
Sincerely,=0D
