The key to winter grazing is forage palatability. I am currently =
running my milking string on pastures that I graze in summer. I use a =
strip wire and feed underneath of it is moved daily. the cows do mill =
about abit and pick at the grass but very little. What I feed this time =
a year is corn silage and balage. the cows clean it up very well with =
only minor waste. When I feed corn silage and dry hay there is =
considerable waste. the cows pick and sort though the hole ration for =
the goodies. this can be limited with the addition of water, but =
sorting is still very appareant.
I still do not know exactly why the there is very little sorting when =
using balage vs. dry hay except for palatability issue's but in my =
experience with it it is apparant.
I do not think the pasture will be harmed in any way as long as I keep =
the cows moving across it. the plus side is I am getting plenty of =
early fertilizer on my pasture for spring growth.
