Also NZ farmers are paid for their milk fat and protein, and are =
charged for milk litres. Thus we breed cows that produce as much =
milksolids as possible with the least amount of milk litres. You should =
bear this in mind if choosing these genetics and compare it with how you =
will be paid.
What you seem to ignore that NZ is NZ, and NZ has their own milk =
compensation system, which is not the same as the US compensation =
system, nor are US dairy product processors a seasonal market. The =
abundance of low cost commodities for supplementing pasture intake is =
vastly different than NZ.
NZ genetics are fine in NZ. But the US market, climate and almost =
everything else is different.
On the other hand, milk yeild is not the only reason why you or any =
other USA farmer may choose NZ genetics. Traits such as confo, =
fertility, longevity etc rate highly with these genetics and a farmer =
may consider this more important than a slight drop in milk yeild. Why =
breed cows if they will only last a few years!
Michelle.
Fertility is not high on inheritability. Longeveity depends far more =
upon environmental factors and good management. We will agree that a =
good grazing system offers much in the way of a cow comfort environment. =
Just getting cows off concrete enhances cow comfort, again an =
environmental factor.
