Our role is to be aware of this, eliminate the hazards (up to the point that
it's economic), and be ready with the resources at hand to deal in a timely
manner with what will happen. But it isn't luck.

We all try to eliminate hazzards but "if you have livestock, you will
have
some deadstock". There's no 100% bulletproof system. Having cows last
longer was a money maker for me, since surplus replacements were very
profitable to sell.
But as I pointed out, you get to a point with extremely old cows that nature
increases the odds against them. Knowing when to give them Ford or Chevy
therapy while they can still walk on the truck is also management.
