Obviously a New Yorker but wonderful choices.
Apache are too speckly for my list but great cows. Citation R Maple...a
little too small for me. Why didn't you mention Willow? I almost put him on
my list.
Eastern AI (local bull stud out thay way) was so type (conformation) phobic
that New Yorkers were starved for good cows <grin>. This was the main
reason
Curtiss (Breeding Service) was so strong in New York.
The Eastern AI sire committee didn't like 'em unless they sired lots of
"blow
bags". Apache and Willow gotin to Eastern by accident and hung on as
"speciality" sires. Citation R Maple was a New York bull at ABS.
Apache story:
When my wife, Jackie, had her 20 Jerseys mingled in our 300 cow confinement
herd, there was a time when she was making her own butter.
This was possible because we were milking into weigh jars in a double three
side-opener. I just needed to tell the young woman milking at night to save
milk from the Jerseys for butter. She could easily drain the weigh jars into
tote buckets for Jackie to churn.
One evening, I forgot to tell the girl milking to save the Jersey milk.
I went out about 11 PM to try and correct my error. We quickly realized that
all the Jerseys had already been through and gone.
What to do? Neither of us wanted to disappoint Jackie.
Thinking quickly, we figured that we had at least 30 unmilked Chapel-Bank
Apaches yet to come in that night.
I just told the young lady milking that night to save milk from the
"Speckled"
cows until she had enough for Jackie.
We knew that if they were speckled, that they had to be Apaches.
And of course I knew that our Apaches averaged higher fat test than Jackie's
Jerseys, over 4.6% at that time.
Next day, Jackie knew there was a difference but never knew why. She was
beaming with pleasure. "Wow, my Jerseys are really testing! Look at all
this butter!! and the milk wasn't even as yellow as usual!!"
We actually had a Apache (that I bought out of the New York State Calf Sale)
that scored Excellent and made 5 1000# fat records with a lifetime test of
5.2. She never really milked enough to suit me but she was a little small so
I forgave her the lack of volume.
