Top of FWO's list is:
> Pabst Roamer
As you know, Pabst Roamer was the sire of the All-American Get of Sire in both
1950 and 1952. His stablemate and paternal brother, Pabst Regal, had the
All-American get in 1949 and 1951. All individuals in those 4 All-American
gets were homebred and owned at Pabst.
Pabst Roamer was born at Pabst farms in 1942 and remained there all his life
until he died there in 1954 at 12 years.
You may wonder at my inclusion of Pabst Roamer on my list.
You probably think, "How could Owen even had known about Roamer? and how
could
he possibly have seen any of them?"
Here's how it happened.
In 1947, my birth set off a chain of events, foremost was a burning desire on
the part of my father to own far better cows.
Bull studs and inseminators were still in the undreamed future. Choices were
very scant. How to get better cows?
Pabst Farm, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin then had the best Holstein herd in the
world. It seemed logical, to Dad and Grandfather, to go there.
Here's how he did it.
When a cow showed the preliminary signs of heat at here at HB Owen & Son,
in
Homerville, Dad jumped in his automobile and drove straight through non-stop
to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
There he picked up whatever semen Pabst would allow him from the last fresh
semen collection from Pabst Roamer. Often there was none available.
Then an immediate turnaround for the non-stop run back through Milwaukee and
Chicago and on into Homerville to breed the cow that was in heat (if she
actually was in heat).
In post war American, there were no decent roads, it was still the age of the
railroad. The Interstate system was still also in the far undreamed future.
It was at least 1200 miles to Pabst at Oconomowoc on bad roads leading right
through two major cities and over 100 fair sized towns.
That's how we got the first Pabst Roamers.
Later, Fred Pabst (head of the Pabst beer dynasty) took pity of such efforts
and ordered that Pabst Roamer's fresh semen be made available to us at He had
it hand carried to Milwaukee Airport and flown to Cleveland. Which was still
a 100 mile round trip on rough roads. All we did was send a telegram. and 8
to 12 hours later we got a call from the airport.
