Effective for what?  Electronic would be far more effective for herd 
management.

But what about absolute, 100% identification in the face of a Hoof and Mouth, 
TB, or Bangs outbreak?  In that case I would want the tattoo.

The Iditrod is taking place at this time.  All those dogs (over 1000) carry 
electronic ID.  I wonder how effective that system is for that purpose.

There would exist powerful incentives to modify the ID of dogs so they could 
replace dropouts.  The prize money is over 3/4 million$,but the glory would 
be a much more powerful incentive than the money.
