Hi folks,
It's my understanding that NAIS is not proposing the use of implants
under the skin for official cattle ID. Instead the normal RFID device
will be a plastic ear tag with the RFID device inside. This is what
they are using for cattle official ID in Australia and Canada--
though in Australia currently allows use of only RFID devices with
HDX technology. The USA and Canada proposes to allow both HDX and FDX
-B technologies
That said, I agree with those who have noted that ear tags and
implants are less than a perfect system -- as are most animal ID
systems.
It's my sense that the real problem, in terms of cattle and NAIS,
will probably come when they ask for the key movements to be recorded
and reported to a database
