Greetings List Friends
This is a web page from the Meristem Land and Science web site, their
Beef Science section. I found it from a the ANIMALNET clipping
service out of the Kansas State University.
Grazing studies yield recipes to beat bluegrass, slash feedlot expenses
http://www.meristem.com/beef/bfs07_15.html
It tells of research by the Western Forage Beef Group at Lacombe Alberta
which has developed "innovative strategies to help both cow-calf
producers and feedlot operators strengthen their land base and their
pocketbooks." The strategy involves new approaches for sod seeding
alfalfa to rejuvenate old pastures.
A second study investigated the potential for feedlot operators to
place incoming calves into a grazing system with Italian ryegrass, as an
expense saving and land benefiting alternative to putting the animals
straight into the feedlot. Results included reduced costs, acceptable
gains and much better health status for the calves.
