I am a 29 year old, first generation, dairy producer in south
central Va. I own 131 acres.

Marcos raises a good point. Corn silage is the perfect compliment
to the high levels of soluable protein from pasture intake. Corn silage
is energy and fiber. If you can graze your herd on the acres closest
to your facilities, have neighbors custom raise corn silage for you, you
should have the time to devote to managing pastures, managing cows and
milking. Corn silage should be fed all year around, though in smaller
amounts in the pasture season.
I recommend a free book called Prescribed Grazing and Feeding
Management for Lactating Dairy Cows co-authored be Karen Sullivan,
Robert DeClue and Darrell Emmick. (Cornell University and Penn. State
researchers contributed. )
Again it is available free through:
USDA - NRCS
Syracuse, New York
Good luck,
