The times of the year that they're going to have the problem of cows not
milking to their potential is when they are at peak production. Of
course that's round about when you're trying your best to keep condition
on the cow so she'll go back into calf easier, so if she doesn't produce
all the milk she physically could, then great .... that's a little more
energy for herself. I'm not too keen on driving milk out of cows at peak
production for this reason. maybe i'm wrong here. i don't know, please
correct me if i am, but it works for me. my view would be usually be
short term loss, long term gain.
and yes, i'd prefer the sleep over the money. most farmers i know
complain about being time poor, and it's the biggest reason for the lack
of young talent coming into the industry. Their parents worked every
hour that god gave them and it becomes real easy to go to a well paid
9-5 job in the city.

Fleeting interest a few years ago, but research told me we have the
wrong kind of cow. (30% Friesian 70% Holstien). It'd probably be fine
for the last 2-3 months of lactation.
