In regards to Steph's question from Thursday on sizes
and numbers pertaining to selling roses. Virtually
all potted roses will be found in #2 containers,
commonly called 2 gallon size. I can't remember
seeing any in recent years in any other size pot.
Besides pot size, roses can also be found in different
grades. The majority sold at retail will be #1
grade-"at least three strong canes 1/4 inch in caliper
and up, branched not higher than three inches from the
bud union." #2 grade are defined as "at least two
canes, one of which shall be a strong cane, 1/4 inch
in caliper and up." There is also a 1 1/2 grade.
This is the definition for shrub rose grades; other
types of roses may differ in number of canes and
caliper. The grading system is defined in the
"American Standard For Nursery Stock" publication,
which all reputable growers adhere to as minimum
standards.
