Just a note about redbuds. My parents live in Iowa, zone 4b and there are
numerous redbuds (and magnolias!) that grow and thrive in their area. They
planted a redbud and it grew well for many years, but even in a climate
where they seem to flourish, there were always dead limbs every spring and
eventually the whole tree died. They cultivated a new redbud tree next to
the original tree and this spring half of that tree was dead. My point--red
buds are definitely temperamental even in more temperate climates.
