Hi Carolyn,

David brought up some valid points.

I will observe that at the U, the greenhouses have lights on 
during the winter to suppliment the weak daylight.  That's 
because they're often trying to fake plants out into thinking 
they're someplace a whole lot warmer!  Or, to mimic 
production practices which push growth.  (It always struck me 
as odd that in floriculture production we fertilized the 
bejabbers out of the plants to get them to grow then sprayed 
growth retardant on them to keep them bushy. Oh well.  Guess 
that's why I'm not a grower someplace.)

My across the street neighbor, St. Steve w/Snowblower, raises 
orchids and various other plants and his attached greenhouse 
faces east (unobstructed by trees) and he doesn't use extra 
lights.

I guess I'm not clear on her plans.  Perennials s/b left in the 
ground.  Annuals are best started from seed or cuttings from 
stock plants.  She must be overwintering lantana or other 
tender perennials.
