June,
I am not a bird expert but I have a couple of thoughts to share.
I have heard of people taping a large cut-out silohette of a bird of
prey (hawk, owl) on their window. I haven't tried that. What I have
tried to keep birds from window suicide is:
-putting tall red dogwood twigs in the windowbox in front of the picture
window to break up the reflection of light on the glass. This helped
somewhat.
-hanging gaudy Christmas tinsel rope in loops or ropes in front of the
window on the outside. This helped somewhat.
After awhile I realized that standing outside looking toward the picture
window, I can see through the house to light and outdoors through the
dining room window on the other side of the house. So I hung some
stained glass things in the dining room window to try to discourage the
flyway fantasy through the house. This may have helped a bit.
Now, clearly you have a female cardinal who is frenzied more than
strictly bligthly sucicidal, although the end result may be the same.
Why is she doing it at this time of year? Hormonal imbalance? I am
sure that is what a male bird doctor would say. SAD? ADD? Or is it just
that the angle of light is the same now as it is in the spring?
Hope the poor thing survives her own energy bursts.
I myself am having my own bird problems by trying to integrate two small
flocks of chickens in the confines of a coop for the winter. One could
draw all kinds of metaphors for prejudice, civil rights, pre-emptive
strikes, haves and have-nots, hunger, gender differences........ oh,
my.
Peace,

I don't know if anyone can help this poor crazy female cardinal or not.
The
poor thing is banging against our picture window and also the bedroom
window, as I am writing this. I understand this in the spring which it
did.
In the spring we pulled the drapes, didn't help. We took down the
sheers,
didn't help, We put card board up on the out side looked terrible and
after
the wind blew it down we put up sheets. Cardinal finally gave up awhile
and
took care of her nest but she is back. Starts in every morning at 7:00
AM.
Why this time of year??
