[Mastgar] Fwd: [afe-horticulture] Asian lady beetles in fruit; homes; etc......

From: Jeffrey Hahn (hahnx002_at_umn.edu)
Date: 10/01/03

I received this from Bill Hutchison and thought you would be interested as
October is the time when MALB start to invade into homes and other
buildings. In addition to the references listed below, also look for an
update on multicolored Asian lady beetle in the upcoming Yard and Garden News

Jeff Hahn

>Extension personnel, Fruit and Veg. Growers, Consultants
>
>The Multicolored Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia axyridis) reached high
>numbers this past summer in Minn. Field Crops, particularly Soybeans -- in
>response to soybean aphid infestations. Consequently, if/when we have
>some warm days in October (e.g., >60F), we anticipate some significant
>flights to homes, and other buildings, in preparation for
>overwintering. Most recently, as in the past 2-3 years, some Midwest
>growers have noticed significant numbers of beetles infesting apples,
>raspberry and grapes.
>
>As our colleagues at Michigan State have observed, this is a "good bug
>with some bad habits."
>
>One of our graduate students, Bob Koch, Entomology, has collated
>considerable information on the lady beetle, with plenty of references for
>additional reading. This color fact sheet is now available at our
>VegEdge site:

>
>Other insect and pest fact sheets are available at:
>
>Feel free to forward this to others as needed.
