Hi Susan,
I would have your caller make sure what he is seeing is truly mold, and
not the accumulation of salts due to insolubles in the water. Switching
to, or diluting tap water with distilled water will reduce or eliminate
salt accumulation. As you know, overtime, salt accumulation can become
toxic to some plants.
When I have seen molds on the pots (and this is pretty uncommon), the
mold was most likely due to excessive watering and/or pots in standing
water. If it is mold, less exuberance in the watering department is in
order. A fan is always useful in reducing damping-off and improving air
circulation, but I doubt it will help if the pots are sopping wet!
HTH,
Janna
